We’ve just completed a floor sanding project as part of a small renovation at the Lister Arms, a popular Thwaits brewery in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Our team was subcontracted to restore the oak flooring in the bar area, which had been through years of muddy boots, beer spills, and general wear and tear. The original stain had left the floor in a sorry state, but our task was to bring it back to life and restore it to its natural beauty.
The first step was to remove the old stain using our high-performance sanding equipment, ensuring we didn’t damage the oak. Once the stain was removed and the boards were sanded smooth, the oak returned to its original state—adding a fresh, lighter feel and revealing the character of the wood, especially in the high-traffic areas like the bar front and entrance.
Given the Lister Arms’ popularity with tourists, many of whom stop by after a long walk in the Dales, it was essential to apply a durable finish to withstand the foot traffic and spills. We chose Bona HD Traffic Lacquer, which is applied over a primer for an extra layer of protection while maintaining the natural look of the oak. The matt finish ensures the floor looks authentic but is tough enough to handle the hustle and bustle of a busy pub.
It’s always a pleasure working in the Yorkshire Dales, and now I’m looking forward to enjoying a pint at the Lister Arms once the rain lets up!
