Custom Birch Plywood Desk & Cabinet for a Photographer – Built in the Yorkshire Dales

At TF Building and Renovations, we love working with creative professionals to build spaces that are both beautiful and practical. Our recent project for a professional photographer near Skipton was all about function, form, and natural materials — blending modern birch plywood joinery with classic oak features to create a workspace that inspires.

The brief was to design and build a custom desk and storage system that worked around an existing vintage oak cabinet, keeping its character while introducing clean lines and contemporary touches. We crafted a solid birch plywood desk, complete with oak bowtie inlays that add both strength and a striking visual detail where the wood naturally splits. It’s a subtle nod to traditional timberwork while keeping a modern edge.

Above the desk, we built open display shelving – perfect for books, kit, and objects that need to be close at hand. The shelving continues the minimalist style, using exposed ply edges and simple fixings to keep the space feeling light and purposeful.

To the side, we installed a large birch plywood cabinet with soft-close drawers and deep shelves, offering plenty of hidden storage for camera gear, paperwork, and the not-so-glamorous side of creative work. Every element was cut and fitted on-site to work seamlessly with the existing oak piece, turning it into a natural centrepiece.
